CONCLUSION:

  • Pizhichil is an Ayurvedic oil massage that means “squeezing” in Malayalam, a language from Kerala, India. Traditionally, this therapy was reserved for royalty. Over time, it became popular among people seeking natural healing. Pizhichil blends two classic Ayurvedic treatments: Snehana (oil massage) and Swedana (sweating therapy). Because of its rich history, Pizhichil is often called the “king of Ayurvedic therapies.

How Pizhichil Works:

During a Pizhichil session, warm herbal oils are poured gently over your body while trained therapists massage you. Usually, the oils are chosen based on your body type and health needs. Common oils include sesame, coconut, or medicated herbal blends. The session often lasts 45 to 60 minutes. First, the therapist warms the oil. Then, they soak a cloth in the oil and squeeze it over your body in slow, rhythmic strokes. This process helps the oil penetrate deep into your muscles and skin. As a result, you feel relaxed and refreshed.

How is Pizhichil Performed?

The procedure of Pizhichil requires skill, patience, and precision. The steps involved include:

1. Preparation of the patient – The individual is made to relax on a wooden plank, lightly covered with a cotton cloth.

2. Warming the oil – Herbal oils, chosen according to the patient’s health condition, are warmed to a soothing temperature.

3. Application of oil and synchronized massage – The oil-soaked cloth is squeezed from the fist with the help of thumb and simultaneously massage is done with the other hand.

4. Duration – A typical session lasts between 45 to 60 minutes and may be recommended daily for 7 to 21 days, depending on the illness.

The experience itself is profoundly relaxing, often described as a meditative state that calms both body and mind.
